Producing clean cookstoves in ghana

Improving living conditions by reducing air pollution.
Protecting forests. Tackling climate change.
BioCarbon’s investment in this project supports the production and distribution of fuel-efficient cookstoves to households relying on charcoal for their cooking needs. The use of these new stoves offers transformational health benefits through the reduction of indoor air pollution. Traditional cooking devices cause millions of premature deaths worldwide from the smoke they produce. The project’s CookMate stove represents a much improved cooking solution, yet is affordable for low-income households in Ghana. Today, it is already providing tangible health benefits to many thousand women and children in this West African country.

The CookMate stove is a technically superior product, creating multiple benefits for families, and its production creates skilled jobs in the country. The CookMate is popular for its ease of use and robust design, being durable yet portable. By reducing fuel consumption by over 50 percent compared to traditional stoves, households realise significant financial benefits, leaving more to spend on essential items like family health and education. Investment in the project has established a local production facility, with over 20 local technicians and artisans trained at stove manufacturing, and a distribution network generating income opportunities for over 200 retailers.

Beyond significant benefits for people’s health and welfare, BioCarbon’s investment in the project helps tackle climate change and conserves highly threatened local forests. Across Africa, forests are cut down to produce charcoal for growing urban populations. By significantly reducing charcoal use, the project directly contributes to conserving Ghana’s remaining forests, and it avoids significant carbon emissions produced from deforestation.

Local project implementation is led by CookClean Ghana Ltd., and carbon asset development is led by ClimateCare.
