Enabling Cleaner Cooking in Malawi |
Tackling deforestation and improving women’s health in rural Malawi |
This project builds and distributes efficient cooking stoves in
rural Malawi, a Least Developed Country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fuelwood
production is a major cause of deforestation in Malawi, and the project’s
stoves reduce fuelwood consumption by more than 60%. Traditional stoves and
open fires also create severe health risks through indoor air pollution. The project’s
cleaner stoves thus also create significant health benefits, particularly for
women and children.
The stoves are built into household kitchens as a fixed element, with most stove parts produced directly in villages from local materials. Community members are trained to build stoves in each village household, with guidance and quality assurance provided by project staff. Local project implementation is led by Total Landcare (TLC) and TLC Green. Carbon asset development is led by C-Quest Capital. |
